Bodmin College Magazine Analysis

Analysis of the Bodmin College Front Cover

Target Audience:
The main audience of the college magazine are 11-19 year olds, although this isn't the only target audience. The magazine can also appeal to parents and teachers who attend the school or have children who do. The social demographic who read this magazine are class C1 down to E. This is simply because not many high class citizens will want to read a news magazine for a college.

Masthead:
The masthead is right at the top of the page. In some cases, this can be an advantage on some covers but in this one, it is difficult to read and doesn't stand out. Because it is white on a light background, you can't really see it from far away. If it was bold and in a large, readable font it would improve the magazine cover drastically. Most covers have a masthead which takes up at-least a 1/6 of the cover page. This takes up a small amount of space in the corner. It is also a different font to the other text on the cover. This makes it look out of place and outdated.

Layout:
As a whole, the layout doesn't fit well together. There are a few reason for this. It has all the pictures in random positions which causes it to look messy. Most magazines follow common conventions like a main image, teaser photos and a maximum of around 4 photos on a cover. This one has too many photos all together with similar dark colours so it blends in too much and doesn't attract the reader.

Colour:
The colour scheme doesn't exactly fit together. The official Bodmin College logo is red, white and yellow but the pictures don't really follow that. A few pictures are red but then you have dark photos which don't fit in with anything else on the page. I believe that the photos don't fit whatsoever and would b far better if they actually fit the colour scheme and weren't just placed in a random order.

Typography:
The typography could be inproved in my opinion. The main text is on the logo, but the masthead is next to it above the red line. The only bad thing is that the actual masthead is a different font. Other than that, you can't really say much about the typography as that's the only text on the page.

Conclusion:
Overall, I believe that this magazine doesn't use as good a cover as it should. It's hard to see what the magazine includes, there's no text and everything is in a random order. This makes it a pointless cover if the magazine was next to others as it wouldn't stand out. Maybe if they added a bit more text and the images were more interesting then it would be worth reading.
